Swans, Eastern Ukraine
Swans, Eastern Ukraine
Swans at the Shcheglovskaya Coal Mine in Makiivka, Russia-controlled eastern Ukraine. 2016.
Signed, open or limited edition fine art archival print.
“I was traveling around eastern Ukraine with my friend Louie Palu, where coal mining is a major industry. We attempted to visit a mine in Ukrainian government-controlled territory, but after a long safety briefing it emerged that they had no idea we would want to take our cameras underground, where the buildup of flammable gases can cause an explosion if certain electronics are introduced. We stayed above ground. A few weeks later, we made arrangements at a different mine, in an area controlled by Russia-backed militants. Their adherence to safety regulations was more relaxed, and down we went with cameras in hand, without incident. Upon returning to the surface, we were given a tour of the rest of the mine territory – a post-apocalyptic industrial wasteland, shrouded in the fog that is so typical of the area in winter. These two swans had, for some reason, chosen this wastewater pond to take a swim, a surreal scene and far better picture than anything found thousands of feet below ground.”
