“I took this picture while photographing a rally organized by family members and friends of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians held in Russian detention. They gathered in the symbolic center of Kyiv to draw attention to a tragic situation that few have the power to influence. As is almost traditional at this point, the rally concluded with participants holding aloft flares that release colored smoke, a sop to photographers and videographers. I glanced up at the stela in the center of the square, a mainstay of the 2013-14 Maidan revolution, and saw it in a way I never had before.”
