“I was cruising in the car down a muddy side street, looking for an angle from which to photograph the massive Azovstal steel factory – one of two that dominates the eastern port city of Mariupol. Suddenly, Olesya and Syoma walked by, the horse straining against the reins, full of energy. I jumped out of the car and literally ran down the road after them, trying to keep up with their brisk pace. At one point Olesya spun around in an effort to control Syoma, with the factory in the background. I had not yet spoken a word to her, but she seemed to understand my interest and carried on as if I was not there. I eventually caught up with her at the small plot of grass where she led her horse to exercise, and we chatted for maybe an hour before returning to her house. There, in the middle of a city of half a million people, she kept some ten horses, a mix of full-size breeds and miniatures. Her oasis.”
