“The city of Mariupol, on the Sea of Azov coast in eastern Ukraine, has had a complicated role in the current conflict. Half a million people live there, a handful of kilometers from the front line. In the early days, it was nearly occupied by Russian-backed forces, and several spasms of violence shook the city. The St. Mary’s Battalion, pictured here, is a Ukrainian militia with an Orthodox Christian foundation that grew out of the Maidan protest movement. We visited their training base on the beach at sunset as their fighters jumped and rolled in the sand, mimicking a battle. Unlike some other oligarch-funded militias, this one was just scraping by. All their weapons were in use at the front, and those still training had to make do with simply pretending to hold a gun.”
