Malanka festival in Krasnoilsk, western Ukraine. 2016.

“Malanka is a festival celebrated in a few villages in the Carpathian Mountains of western Ukraine. Held each January 13-14 to mark the start of the Orthodox New Year, costumed revelers march house to house, performing songs and dances while drinking heavily and collecting money for a future party. Its roots are ancient, with prescribed rolls for women, single men, married men, and children. Already some 16 hours into their festivities, I took this picture after consuming far more homemade vodka the previous evening than I had realized, and I was suffering from a massive hangover. In one brief, lucky moment of lucidity, the sun popped out and the energy of the group coalesced, gifting me this image. Shortly after, the clouds rolled in and snow started falling in large, wet globs. As darkness eventually fell over the fresh snow, exhausted participants stumbled home to sleep off their efforts.”
