“I met Jan Muhammad at the improbably-named Lucky Coal Mine, a small operation near the Indus River delta in southern Pakistan. For most of his life, Jan Muhammad worked as a fisherman on nearby Lake Keenjhar, which is fed by the Indus and supplies most of the drinking water for the megacity of Karachi. However, after years of worsening pollution, the lake no longer supplies the fish needed to sustain his livelihood. The cause of the lake’s problems can be indirectly and partially related to climate change, so I was especially taken with the fact that his new career was not only the furthest thing from the freedom of the open water, but directly worsens a problem that led to the demise of Jan Muhammad’s lifestyle.”
