Ice Rink
Ice Rink
People ice skate in the city’s central Theater Square. Mariupol, Ukraine. 2022.
Signed, open or limited edition fine art archival print.
“Less than a month before Russia’s open invasion of Ukraine, I was walking around the center of Mariupol. It was the end of January, and the ice rink attracted my attention for its ordinary coziness, its disconnect from the narrative of looming war. As the world wondered what the building Russian forces on the border would portend, people in this port city near the front line lived their last few weeks of peace. Only steps away was the Drama Theater in which hundreds of people sheltered and died when the building was destroyed by a Russian missile six weeks later, despite the word ‘CHILDREN’ being written on the ground outside, visible in satellite photos.”
