Camel Herder
Camel Herder
A herder leads his camels into the mangrove forests of the Indus River delta. Sindh, Pakistan. 2019.
Signed, open or limited edition fine art archival print.
“I was visiting the fishing village of Ibrahim Hyderi, outside Karachi, Pakistan, for a story about the Indus River. Located in the Indus River delta, the area receives almost no water anymore from the river, as most is withdrawn further upstream to support a vast irrigation system, growing crops in what would otherwise be a desert. It’s transformed Pakistan’s economy, but left delta dwellers high and dry. It took several visits to this man with his herd of camels to capture the moment when he led them out to feed in the mangrove forests in the delta. This is not where camels would normally go, and it was technically illegal, but in the parched region, where fresh water no longer flows, there was no other choice.”
