Boatmen on Lake Manchar, Pakistan
Boatmen on Lake Manchar, Pakistan
Mohanna boatmen. Lake Manchar, Sindh, Pakistan. 2017.
Signed, open or limited edition fine art archival print.
“The Mohanna have lived an aquatic life on Lake Manchar, in Pakistan, for centuries. Some (women in particular) spend their entire lives without setting foot on dry land, even though they are only a hundred meters from shore and the water is only a meter deep. They get everything they need from the lake: fish, fowl, fresh water. Now their traditions are under threat as the lake becomes increasingly polluted due to agricultural runoff, pesticides and fertilizers that make the water unsafe to drink and kill the fish that draw the birds. These incredible hats are decoys used to sneak up on birds when hunting. I watched one man slowly creep with his rifle through the water, getting closer and closer, until he lined up a shot that killed two birds at once.”
