Black Glacier
Black Glacier
The jet-black Shishper glacier. Hasanabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. 2019. Published in National Geographic Magazine, July 2020.
Signed, open or limited edition fine art archival print.
“I didn’t know what to expect as we drove, then walked up the mountain to the Shishper Glacier. Moments earlier, I had been in the village below photographing men packing up the apple harvest, to be shipped all over Pakistan. The next, I was face to face with the jet-black glacier that waters the apple orchards. Surprisingly, the glacier is surging down the valley, demolishing the infrastructure that carries the water to the fields below. There can be many reasons for glacial surge, though climate change is a major factor. The black color comes from debris embedded in the ice.”
